Does a car need insurance while its driver is banned?
A driving ban does not automatically remove the vehicle’s insurance obligations. In Great Britain, a vehicle kept off the road and declared SORN does not need motor insurance under the continuous-insurance rules. Keeping a vehicle on a public road is a different situation.
Start with where the vehicle will be kept
GOV.UK says a vehicle needs motor insurance if used on roads and in public places. It also sets out the off-road and SORN exception under continuous insurance enforcement. A car simply being unused is not the same as being kept off-road and declared SORN.
Do not cancel insurance just because you have stopped driving. First check the vehicle’s location, legal off-road status, and any finance or other contractual conditions. This guide does not file a SORN or confirm that a particular parking location meets the requirements.

The driver and the vehicle need separate checks
A disqualified person cannot drive during the ban. Another person driving the car needs their own lawful entitlement and the correct insurance arrangement. Do not assume a named-driver entry or “driving other cars” wording covers any person in any situation.
If the car needs to be moved, discuss a lawful arrangement with the relevant provider or recovery service. Buying a policy in your name does not let you personally drive while disqualified.

Off-road exemption is not fire or theft protection
Not being legally required to carry motor insurance in a qualifying off-road situation does not mean the vehicle has protection against loss or damage. If you want storage, fire or theft protection, ask a provider about the specific product and exclusions.
The supplied Quotezone link is for convicted-driver insurance comparison. We have not verified it as a dedicated laid-up or storage-insurance route, so this page does not present it as one. Ask about the intended storage arrangement directly.

Check costs and evidence before cancelling
Ask the existing provider about cancellation terms, outstanding payments, refunds and evidence of any no-claims discount. Do not assume that paying monthly means there is no remaining financial commitment.
Ask a future provider how it treats a gap and NCD evidence. We do not claim that every gap resets the discount or that storage cover preserves it. When you return to road use, check the vehicle obligations, driving entitlement and new policy separately.

A preparation example
Illustrative preparation: a banned driver considers leaving the car on a driveway. They check the SORN and off-road conditions, the finance agreement and any desired theft protection before deciding what to do about the existing policy.
Your checklist
- Check the actual vehicle-storage location.
- Read the official off-road and SORN requirements.
- Check finance and current-policy conditions.
- Decide whether separate storage protection is needed.
- Keep NCD evidence and ask future providers about gaps.
Questions answered
Can I keep an uninsured car on the road because I am banned?
A ban does not create a general exemption from vehicle-insurance obligations. Check the official rules.
Does SORN insure my car against theft?
No. An off-road declaration is not an insurance policy.
This task calls for checking the official rules or speaking to the existing provider. A comparison link is not the next step for every situation.
