A new conviction during an existing car insurance policy
Check your current policy’s notification requirements after a new conviction, endorsement or licence change. Do not assume every policy requires the same timing, or that buying a new policy resolves your responsibilities under the existing one.
Find the actual requirement and the trigger
Locate the policy wording, schedule, renewal instructions and the insurer or broker contact route. Look for requirements about endorsements, convictions, pending proceedings, driving entitlement and changes during the policy term.
These terms are not interchangeable. A pending matter is not necessarily a recorded conviction, while a change to licence status can be relevant even if an application asks a separate question about offences. Read the specific definitions and ask if they are unclear.
Prepare a factual conversation
Keep the relevant documents available and explain the event using its actual status, code and dates where requested. Ask when the provider needs the information, whether cover continues as currently arranged, and whether it will issue changed documents.
Ask about any fee, additional premium, conditions or cancellation notice that the provider says applies. We do not predict which of these outcomes will occur. Keep the written response and check the effective time of any change.

Check driving permission independently
If the event involves disqualification or revocation, do not use the insurer’s continued policy as proof that you may drive. GOV.UK sets out separate licensing rules, including the new-driver six-point revocation process and the requirements after a ban.
Likewise, a licence that permits driving does not prove the current insurance covers every journey, driver or vehicle. Both the licensing and policy checks are necessary.

If a policy is cancelled or an application declined
Keep the actual notice, reason and dates rather than paraphrasing everything as “refused insurance”. Future forms may ask different questions about cancellation, voidance or refusal. Ask the new provider to clarify how it wants the event represented.
For a disagreement about an existing policy or claim, use the insurer’s complaints procedure and appropriate independent support. A comparison site is not the complaints route and cannot reverse the original provider’s decision. This page therefore prioritises the existing-provider conversation over an advertising link.
A preparation example
Illustrative preparation: an insured driver receives new points and cannot find a clear notification deadline in a summary booklet. They obtain the full wording and ask the provider for written clarification rather than assuming the renewal date is the deadline.
Your checklist
- Find the full policy wording and change-notification terms.
- Check the actual status of the event.
- Ask about timing, documents and any changed conditions.
- Check licence permission independently.
- Keep cancellation or refusal notices if any are issued.
Questions answered
Must every driver notify every insurer immediately?
This site has not verified a universal rule across all policies. Read your own notification terms and clarify uncertainty promptly.
Will another quote fix an existing claim dispute?
No. Use the existing provider and its complaints process for that issue.
This task calls for checking the official rules or speaking to the existing provider. A comparison link is not the next step for every situation.
